With the Aurora, we wanted to push the boundaries of hypercar performance. To do so, it was clear that bold, imaginative technical solutions would be the only answer. And yet, excellence could not be achieved at the expense of emotion – of driver feedback and enduring satisfaction. That is why Aurora combines a blue-blooded V12 with additional power from hybridisation, teaming that most noble of engine configurations – the perfect natural balance of twelve cylinders arranged in a vee – with the silent but formidable torque of electrical energy, for the very best of both worlds and an unmatched powertrain combination.
Mjølner: the internal combustion peak. As the kinetic soul of the Aurora, this engine represents a spectacular fusion of power and emotion, seated perfectly within the Tur and Agil. Conceived as a clean-sheet design, this custom 6.6-litre, 90-degree V12 utilizes a ‘hot vee’ configuration, positioning four turbochargers within the cylinder heads for unparalleled thermal efficiency and packaging. With optional levels of electrical assistance for instantaneous response and variable geometry for relentless urgency, it delivers an extreme 1,250hp and an emotional 9,800 RPM yet thanks to innovative patented dual chamber jet ignition & pre-heated catalysts it retains the necessary environmental compliance.
To achieve Aurora’s stratospheric performance, Zenvo utilises the power of the electron to amplify both emotive response and ultimate output. While the Agil features a hybridised seven-speed gearbox and a 200hp crankshaft e-motor, the Tur enhances this further with two independent front-axle motors, providing four-wheel drive and a total of 1,850hp.
The all-new ZM1 platform is the foundation of everything the Aurora stands for, and a masterclass in creating a formidably rigid structure, to the benefit of both performance and occupant safety. Developed in partnership with technology pioneers, Managing Composites, it leverages F1-inspired understanding of crash structures to realise a ‘tub’ chassis core that weighs just 120kg, but with supreme strength. This is never more evident than in the crucially important area of suspension hardpoints, where a target of 63,000Nm/degree ensures exemplary control over suspension geometry. With such excellence, it’s no wonder that Aurora lays bare to the naked eye so much of its carbon chassis – it is the car’s soul.
It was of fundamental importance that the Aurora began life with the optimum suspension configuration, which is why it boasts an all-independent, pushrod-activated double wishbones setup as per high-end racing practice. However, to realise the level of ride and handling sophistication desired by the Zenvo development team, an active element was crucial to enabling the necessary bandwidth for roll stiffness and ride pliancy, as well as adjustability of ride height. The result is a level of ride quality that enables a true grand touring experience, but that retains appeal as a true driver’s car. Such control is particularly important for the Agil, where extreme aerodynamic loads require consistent control of the chassis platform to maintain constant downforce.
The laws of physics states that heat will be an often unwanted by-product of extreme power, and so key to the Aurora’s performance is how it manages heat and the corresponding forces inevitable with the speeds it can generate. The Aurora’s braking system for example, developed with specialists Alcon Components, features carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide brake discs, with billet monoblock calipers, of six pot design on the front axle, and four pot on the rear. As well as saving unsprung mass, this braking setup offers supreme braking power and resistance to fade, and the heat generated is carefully managed away from the wheel wells by CFD-modelled cooling paths, which also applies to both the flow of cooling air to the car’s radiators, and the extraction of hot air out of them.
